Stay Safe Online Amid Cyber Threats in Pakistan: Follow PKCERT Guidance

In light of recent tensions at the border and unusual online activity, our national cybersecurity team, PK CERT, is urging everyone to stay especially alert when using the internet. During times like these, misinformation can spread rapidly, and the risk of cyber threats increases. It’s particularly important not to share any photos or videos showing the movement of our armed forces, even if shared unintentionally, as they can be misused by those aiming to harm national security. By thinking carefully before clicking, sharing, or forwarding anything online, especially sensitive visuals, we can all play a part in protecting ourselves, our communities, and our country. Let’s stay responsible and support each other both online and offline. Here are some simple tips and guidelines:

1. Don’t Share Unverified Information

Spreading unchecked news can cause unnecessary panic, damage trust in authorities, and help spread false narratives. Always verify content before sharing it. Avoid forwarding messages, screenshots, or social media posts unless they come from official sources.

2. Think Before You Click

Cyberattacks often begin with a careless click. Avoid clicking links or downloading files from unknown sources or malicious links. Hover over links to see the real URL before clicking, and never enter personal or financial information on untrusted websites.

3. Trust Only Verified Sources

Rely on official websites like PK CERT, the Ministry of IT & Telecom, or platforms like Cyberwalk.pk for credible information. Don’t trust forwarded WhatsApp messages or unofficial social media accounts.

4. Manage App Permissions

Apps often request access to features they don’t need. Revoke unnecessary permissions and delete unused or suspicious apps. Only install apps from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to ensure safety.

5. Stay Updated with PK CERT

PK CERT provides important alerts and guidance on cyber threats. Visit their website regularly, enable alerts from trusted sources, and report anything suspicious at info@pkcert.gov.pk or by calling +92-51-9203422. You can read the full cybersecurity advisory here

6. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Avoid using the same password across different platforms. Use a password manager to generate and store strong passwords, and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever available for extra security.

7. Keep Devices and Software Updated

Always install updates for your phone, computer, and antivirus software. Updates patch security flaws and protects you from new threats. Enable automatic updates to stay protected without manual checks.

8. Be Cautious with Emails

Don’t trust emails that urge immediate action or request personal information. Always verify the sender’s email address. When in doubt, contact the organization directly using official contact details.

9. Secure Your Wi-Fi Network

Change your router’s default password and enable WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. Hide your network name (SSID) if possible, and limit access to trusted devices only to reduce the risk of unauthorized access.

10. Be Mindful of Online Sharing

Think carefully before posting anything online. Review your privacy settings and occasionally search your name to check your digital footprint. Responsible sharing helps protect your identity.

Disregard False Messages on ATM Closure & Ransomeware Attacks

The National Cyber Emergency Response Team strongly advises the public to disregard and nullify all unverified messages currently circulating on social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp, that claim widespread ransomware attacks, ATM closures, or dangerous video files (e.g., “Dance of the Hillary” or “tasksche.exe”).
